Improvisation 1-4

Instructors: Kim Ratcliffe and Ted Quinlan

Studied fundamental improvisation techniques such as improvising over turnarounds, applying scales and modes over various chord types, and applying rhythmic devices such as cross-rhythms. These techniques were then applied to both standard and contemporary jazz tunes. Piano voicings and several transcriptions completed by the students were also studied in depth

Special Topics in Contemporary Music 1 + 2

Studied the compositional styles and techniques used by major 20th century classical composers, such as Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Bartok, and Messiaen. After studying these elements, a short composition was created by each student using the techniques discussed in class.

The influence of classical composers on the music of jazz musicians such as Jim Hall, John Zorn, and Ben Monder was studied later in the course


Contenporary Jazz Arranging 1 - 4 

Instructor: Andy Ballantyne (1-2) & John MacLeod (3-4)

Focused on arranging works for big band as well as small & large ensemble in various styles.  Topics studied included: background writing, tutti writing, shout choruses, introductions and codas, ballad writing, writing for woodwind doubles, and writing for strings.

Explored various philosophies of learning and how to approach teaching

Completed two practicum placements to explore teaching in the real world

Work for erhu, piano, cello: Worked with the CMC and Musica Reflecta to compose my work Outlets, written to explore the use of the ancient Chinese erhu in contemporary classical music
